Kolkata, October 13, 2025 — Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced a major change in its recruitment process for Management Trainees (MTs). According to an official order (Ref No: CIL/C5A (PC)/2107297/1403), CIL’s Board of Directors, in its 483rd meeting held on October 8, 2025, has approved a shift in the recruitment method for MTs in engineering disciplines.
Starting from the recruitment year 2025, all engineering disciplines except Mining will now be recruited through the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. This marks a significant move away from the previous system, where these positions were filled based on candidates’ GATE exam scores.
However, CIL clarified that the GATE-based recruitment channel will continue exclusively for the Mining discipline, ensuring that mining engineers remain under the previous selection framework.
The decision has been issued with the approval of the Competent Authority, as confirmed by the General Manager (Human Resources), Policy Cell, Coal India Limited.
This change is expected to widen participation and streamline the selection process through standardized computer-based testing.
